Fort Worth, TX - The Chargers (0-2) fell just shy in a 35-34 loss to Plano (1-1) in a game that featured 10 lead changes. In their 2022 home opener, Central opened the scoring courtesy of a 47-yard field goal from
Max Miranda. Miranda would go 2-for-2 on field goals and added a 25-yard chip shot in the second quarter, while Miranda and
Logan Long would combine to go 4-for-4 on PAT's. After trailing 7-3 at the end of the first quarter,
Chase Garnett would score the first off three rushing touchdowns with a 6-yard run off the right tackle giving the Chargers a 10-7 lead, their second lead of the night.
Garnett would go on to collect 140 rushing yards on 21 carries, averaging just over 6.5 yards per carry, and three touchdowns, earning the title of
Menace from Dave Campbell's Texas Football. The highlight of Garnett's night would come courtesy of a 40-yard touchdown run on a third and inches play giving the Chargers a 17-14 lead with 7:19 to play in the second quarter. Plano would finish the half with a touchdown pass of their own, creating the 6th lead change of the night, and take a 21-17 lead into halftime.
Kelden Ryan provided the fireworks in the third quarter with a 50-yard quarterback scamper to give the Chargers a 27-21 lead. Ryan would go on to collect 99 total yards rushing while going 4-for-9 for 54 passing yards. Sophomore
Landon Smith would lead the way in the air going 12-for-18 for 138 yards and a quarterback rating of 89.6.
Garnett would score his final touchdown of the night with a one-yard touchdown run as the Chargers led 34-28 with just over eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, Plano would re-take the lead with 4:23 to play and hold on for the one point victory.
Senior receiver
Ethan Palcich led all Central wide outs with seven receptions for 84 yards.
The Chargers will look to rebound as they head south to Arlington and take on Arlington Lamar (0-2) at 7:00PM Friday. Lamar is coming off a 50-7 loss in Waxahachie, and lost their season opener to fellow KISD school Timber Creek 48-25.
