Fort Worth, TX - Thursday night, the whole of Charger Nation will celebrate 22 seniors who've given a tremendous amount to not only Central High School, but their community over the course of the last four years. Their high school career's started during the disarray that was Covid in the fall of 2020, and luckily regained a sense of normalcy as they progressed to their sophomore season and beyond.
While it can often be easiest to focus on their on the field performances, perhaps this group of seniors most impressively performance came off the field, as every single one of these student-athletes carries a GPA above 3.0. The group grade point average comes in at an impressive 3.43, and four of these Chargers rank in the top 20 percent of their graduating class.
For years, these young men and women have devoted the early hours before sunrise, hours after the final school bell rings, and long after the parking lot has emptied and the traffic has dissipated. They've made the journey back to campus on weekends, and they've done all of this in the pursuit of a calling greater than themselves. They've missed out on time with family and friends to enjoy success and fight through adversity with a different type of family - their teammates and coaches.
Long after this season - and the years have passed, it's these bonds that these student-athletes will remember, and somewhere along the line, they'll learn that the individual plays or results of the games no longer matters. Rather, it's the lessons learned, and the character that was often tested and built through athletics, that remains and truly matters.
In reflecting upon the first group of players Head Coach Mike Sports has led from their freshmen to senior year, Sports said "This group of student-athletes and parents have been a picture-perfect example of Charger Pride. Their commitment to a cause greater than themselves and the lessons they've learned through the years have undoubtedly prepared them for their future endeavors." Sports added that it's not just the student-athletes that deserve recognition - "This group of parents have given unmeasurable amounts of time and energy to not just Charger Football, but the Central community and Charger Nation. The support these parents have given to not just their sons, but the program at large speaks volumes about the spirit that fills our Charger Community."
Below, each of our seniors were given an opportunity to discuss what they've enjoyed most across the course of their football careers, advice for current and future Chargers, and their plans for life after Central. Additionally, their loved ones have provided reflection on what football has meant to their Charger and how it's grown and prepared them for the future.
